Title : HQ Safety Health Week Campaign

Theme: “Safety and Health is Everyone’s Responsibilities”

The HQ Safety and Health Week Campaign 2008 was successfully organized by the HQ Occupational Safety and Health committee from 27th to 31st October 2008.

Launched by our Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Haji Abdul Aziz bin Dato’ Haji Husain at Wisma SESCO car park, the opening ceremony was attended by all the general managers and staff.

In his speech, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Haji Abdul Aziz emphasized the importance of safety and health in our daily lives and reminded staff of everyone’s responsibility to ensure safety and prevention of accidents and injuries at the workplace.

He added that the well-being of people has increased manifolds with new inventions, enhanced safety technology, increased knowledge, better work organization and management of occupational safety and heath. Good work conditions also help promote productivity and high quality production.

To that end, the management in its environment, safety, and health Policy, is committed to provide the resources required to ensure the safety of staff at work. Control measures have been taken by the management over the years to eliminate hazards at the workplace. Engineering and administrative controls have also been implemented to minimize potential risks.

There are a lot of hazards at the workplaces which are not possible to eliminate or control by other means and the management therefore will taking measure to improve work safety by establishing safety work procedures and providing personal protective equipment to staff. Apart from the control measure, we need to have a positive attitude toward occupational safety and health management for it to be effective. Safety and health at work should not be understood as a separate activity but as a part of operational process and good corporate culture.

Safety and health audit of the workplaces should be carried out constantly in order to ensure that the safe working procedures are effective. This purpose can be achieved via proper training, and retraining theemployees and ensure they comply with the safe work procedures. The hazards, which are biological, physical, chemical, and electrical in nature, do not only exist at the workplaces but also at our homes and public area.

Nowadays, electricity is considered essential to our modern life, both at home and workplaces. Our employees like engineers, electricians, and power line workers work with electricity directly while the office staff who work with it indirectly. Because it has become such a familiar and essential part of our daily life, many of us do not give much thought to it and we tend to overlook the hazards electricity poses and fail to treat them with the safety standard they deserves.

In fact, the electrical accidents are largely preventable through safe operating practices and good discipline
